The following resources proved extremely helpful when compiling the annotations for Grant Morrison’s Animal Man.
– Deep Space Transmissions includes links and references to many interviews with Grant Morrison conducted from the 1980s to 2013.
– The book Grant Morrison: The Early Years by Timothy Callahan (Sequart Research & Literacy Organization, 2007) covers a few works that Morrison produced in this period, with about a quarter of the book devoted to Animal Man. The text goes through each of the Morrison issues and provides a very clear overview of the series’ themes. An inexpensive online version is available for purchase from http://sequart.org/books/1/grant-morrison-the-early-years/.
– The Animal Man content in Grant Morrison: Combining the Worlds of Contemporary Comics by Marc Singer (University Press of Mississippi, 2012) is shorter and more dense than the Callahan text but similarly outlines the themes of the series and the extent to which Morrison revisits these ideas throughout the course of their career.  You may be able to borrow this from your local library.
– The Annotated Crisis on Infinite Earths now only exists as an archived website, but this page was an early attempt to note all of the references to the Crisis on Infinite Earths within the pages of Animal Man.
