The Crossover Years (1996-2008)

Covering the years between the first series and the Last Days of Animal Man mini-series…

Buddy spends the next decade without a series of his own.  After making infrequent, minor appearances for several years, Buddy played a part in the ‘Infinite Crisis’ event of 2005 (a sequel to 1985’s Crisis on Infinite Earths). Following this, Buddy’s adventures in space with Adam Strange and Starfire are documented in three separate series between 2006 and 2009, including 52, which ran weekly between 2006/2007 and was co-written by Grant Morrison.

Appearances that I consider to be fairly minor are indented.  The below titles were published by DC Comics unless otherwise noted.

Aquaman (1994) #35
“Sight Unseen”, August 1997
Peter David [w], Jim Calafiore [p, c], Peter Palmiotti [c]
The Gamesman has kidnapped Maxine and placed her in an underwater craft that is running out of oxygen. Animal Man must save her or else the Gamesman will keep his head as a trophy. Nearby, Aquaman has been blinded by Poseidon after defeating Triton in battle. He struggles to find his way home and meets Buddy. They are confronted by Gamesman, with Aquaman using his other senses in an underwater battle against the villain. Eventually Gamesman is defeated and flees, while Maxine is rescued by a whale.
Aquaman indirectly refers to Buddy as belonging to the Vertigo Universe, though Buddy would rarely make further appearances in titles published under that imprint. This is also Buddy’s final appearance with his long, black and white hair.

JLA: The Nail (1998) #2-#3
September 1998
November 1998
Alan Davis [w, p]
In #2, the JLA investigate who is behind the campaign against metahumans and who has created a forcefield around the Earth. Both Batman and Hal are framed for destructive acts, the Atom finds The Thinker dead, the Outsiders are beaten by an unseen force near the North Pole, and Aquaman is stunned and captured by an underwater craft. Flash investigates the disappearances of major villains and stops Amazo’s attack on Ra’s Al Ghul’s base. Ra’s explains that the villains were pitted against each other by some unknown mastermind. Lois Lane arrives at a television station in time to see Metamopho assault Mayor Lex Luthor and kill Perry White. Deputy Mayor Jimmy Olsen instructs Lois to investigate a governmental alien research facility near Smallville. Lois is given a tour of the facility and is asked to produce a documentary to expose the metahuman threat. Lana Lang provides Lois with a tip to visit the Kent farm, where Lois finds that the Kents are sheltering persecuted metahumans and believe that Lex is being controlled by an alien force. Martian Manhunter infiltrates the LexCorp building and witnesses another attack by Metamorpho. Before he disintegrates, Metamorpho explains that he was being compelled to commit violent acts because Sapphire was being held hostage. Martian Manhunter insists on visiting Lex in his corporate officers but is zapped by a star-shaped creature. In #3, Wonder Woman travels to meet the president but the White House explodes. She is attacked by reprogrammed Metal Men, and knocked unconscious by one of Lex Luthor’s new super-robots, the Liberators. Other members of the Justice League are captured by the Liberators, but not before Green Lantern discovers that they are actually cloned Kryptonians. Lois speaks to Jimmy Olsen, who explains that Luthor discovered a Kryptonian space ship in Smallville and then attempted to graft Kryptonian DNA to a human subject. The tests were successful on Olsen (because he was once Elastic Lad) and he was granted the power and psychology of a Kryptonian. Olsen now wants to rebuild Krypton on Earth by turning humans into Kryptonians. Batman, Catwoman and others free the imprisoned JLA, and a Lantern-assisted Batman then fights Olsen. They find themselves on a remote Amish farm, where one of the farmers stops Olsen. Olsen recognises the farmer as the original Kryptonian, Kal-El, and kills Kal’s adoptive Amish parents. After a fight with Kal, Olsen disintegrates because he is molecularly unstable like the Liberators. The Kents take care of Kal-El and he joins the JLA as Superman.
‘The Nail’ was an Elseworlds miniseries set in a reality where the infant Superman was never discovered by the Kents. In #2, Buddy can be seen imprisoned in the alien research facility, alongside Dolphin and B’wana Beast.  In #3, Buddy appears in one panel with many other heroes as Superman grieves his adoptive parents.

JLA: Year One (1998) #12
“Justice For All”, December 1998
Mark Waid, Brian Augustyn [w], Barry Kitson [p]
Superheroes, coordinated by the newly formed Justice League, respond to the threat of an alien invasion by Appellaxians, who can appear in various forms (made out of diamonds, fire, mercury, etc.). The Appellaxians want to destroy all life on Earth and decide to attack the non-super powered population but Vandal Savage appears and kills some of them with their own technology. Savage offers the weapon to the Justice League, but they are sceptical, with Martian Manhunter voicing ethical concerns. He screens the weapon’s broadcast through his telepathic abilities to disable the aliens without killing them (though it is extremely painful for him) and the aliens and their leader are herded through a dimensional portal. The Justice Society express their pride in the new League. The League vote on whether Green Arrow should join their team, while, unknown to them, he is actually financing the group.
Buddy assists Aquaman and the Sea Devils in an underwater fight against alien invaders.

JLA (1997) #27
“The Bigger They Come…”, March 1999
Mark Millar [w], Mark Pajarillo [p]
Flash (Wally West) and Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner) visit Atom (Ray Palmer) to ask him to rejoin the Justice League, but he explains that he no longer wants to be part of superhero teams. The Justice League receive a tip from T.O. Morrow that a dangerous Amazo robot will be activated in one hour. Other heroes meet in Tokyo to discuss expanding the JLA, but Martian Manhunter and others are called to help with Amazo, who awakens with the combined powers of the Justice League. JLA reservists join the fight, but Amazo adapts to their powers too. Atom has an idea, asking Superman to disband the JLA, which then robs Amazo of its powers. Atom agrees to help out with the JLA part time.
Buddy can be seen flying towards the battle with Amazo.

Resurrection Man (1997) #24-#27
#24: “Forgotten But Not Gone”, May 1999
Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning [w], Jackson Guice [p]
#25: “Millennium Then”, June 1999
Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning [w], Paul Ryan [p], Jackson Guice [p, c]
#26: “Millennium Now!”, July 1999
Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning [w], Anthony Williams [p]
#27: “The End of the Earth”, August 1999
Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning [w], Jackson Guice [p]
In #24, Cave Carson and his new group of Forgotten Heroes attempt to rescue Mitch Shelley (Resurrection Man) from Codebrowser Ranch: a research facility run by Vandal Savage’s son, Cliff Dewitt. Shelley (in a female form) and the Body Doubles (Bonny and Carmen) fight DeWitt, who is wearing a tektite suit of armour made from the skeleton of lab director Hooker. The Body Doubles (Bonny and Carmen) kill Shelley so that she can be resurrected in a different form. Meanwhile, Hooker’s sentient skull takes control of the armour, decapitating Dewitt so that Hooker can have a body again. The resurrected Shelley is rescued by the Forgotten Heroes, who believe he may be their former teammate Immortal Man. In #25: in the hope of jogging Shelley’s memories of being Immortal Man, Carson recounts an adventure when the Forgotten Heroes fought the Forgotten Villains and tried to prevent Vandal Savage from possessing another meteor fragment. In the present, Carson’s base is attacked by Savage’s Firewalkers and the Heroes are forced to flee, triggering a volcanic eruption to cover their tracks. Carson explains that another meteor fragment is hurtling through time to the present, and they need Immortal Man’s help to find it before Savage does. The team travels to Antarctica, where Savage has already built a base. Shelley senses the meteor shortly before it crashes to Earth. In #26, the Heroes and Savage recover from the impact, while the Titans and Justice League also appear. Shelley meets with Savage who explains that a reality-warping creature has emerged from the impact crater and must be stopped. After the other superheroes are defeated by the creature, it is up to the Forgotten Heroes. Shelley and Savage are unaffected by the reality warps due to their exposure to the tektites that grant their powers. During their conversation, Shelley expresses the belief that he is Immortal Man, but Savage reveals that he has Immortal Man imprisoned.  In #27, Shelley forces Savage to free Immortal Man and the three track the creature past several defeated superheroes. They fight the creature, with Shelley able to transform his body into a super dense crystal, but it is too powerful. They decide to use the tektites to gain more understanding about it, and learn that the creature is an experiment sent by another alien race. Shelley pities it, but Immortal Man still hopes to use it against Savage, while Savage is concerned only with claiming its power. Because of their competing interests, they lose the creature again. Feeling repentant for his selfishness, Immortal Man sacrifices himself by connecting with the creature and overloading their tektite levels until they are both destroyed.
The Forgotten Heroes appear throughout, with Animal Man’s involvement varying from issue to issue. The Forgotten Heroes this time consist of Buddy, Fetish, Cave Carson, Ballistic, The Ray and Vigilante.

JLA (1997) Annual #3
“Gorilla Warfare”, 1999
Lee Kaminski [w], Jason Orfalas [p]
Solovar, king of Gorilla City, decides to reveal his people’s existence to the world and join the United Nations, but is killed by a car bomb soon afterwards. Solovar’s nephew Ulgo becomes the king. The assassination and Ulgo’s appointment has been engineered by a group of gorillas referred to as the inner circle of the Simian Scarlet. The group hopes to stoke anti-human sentiment but this group are, in turn, being manipulated by the telepathic ape Grodd. Members of the Justice League are called to Gorilla City and are ambushed and transformed into gorillas by a bomb that alters its victim’s morphic resonance. Only Martian Manhunter is psychologically unaffected and helps the others back to the Watchtower. He meets with Animal Man to understand more about the gorillabomb and how to reverse its effects. Meanwhile, at the UN General Assembly, Ulgo declares war on humans and transforms the delegates into gorillas. The ape superheroes arrive with a cure but are not able to transform both themselves and the delegates, so decide to save the humans. Afterwards, the heroes learn that further attacks are planned in their cities so decide to split up to respond to the threats.
Buddy only appears on two pages but it is notable that he is obviously still grappling with what he has learned about the nature of reality during the Grant Morrison issues.

Sebastian Faust unleashes the Blue Devil to defeat Nebiros, which results in Faust getting his soul back. However, Faust then murders Enchantress, sacrificing his newly restored soul to restart the fires. This causes the demons on Earth to be sucked back into Hell. Captain Marvel obtains the Spear of Destiny and stabs a weakened Asmodel. The villain appears, absorbing the energy from the rod before leaving to seek out further weapons to gain more power. Elsewhere, Courtney Whitmore (the new Star-Spangled Kid and the step-daughter of Dugan) learns that her mother is starting in a public relations role at her high school. Courtney wears the Cosmic Converter Belt during class, which draws the attention of Nebula Man. They fight and Courtney manages to electrocute and destroy Nebula Man. Big Barda is injured and is taken back to New Genesis to heal. Animal Man discovers something about the Mageddon weapon and alerts the JLA. Martian Manhunter psychically interrogates Mageddon and discovers Supmerman trapped inside it. Flash arrives on Earth bringing The Glimmer from Wonderworld. In #41, Buddy explains that the fighting on Earth is caused by Mageddon stimulating the primitive, reptilian brain of humans and this is making them territorial and aggressive. He and other heroes build a ray on Easter Island to temporarily give superpowers to all humans, with Glimmer powering the device. Zauriel finds that angels in the Shining City are not doing anything to aid Earth, but he inspires other angels of the Pax Dei to become mortal and return to Earth with him. The angels stop the world leaders from warring. Batman and Martian Manhunter try to give Superman the mental strength to overcome his despair and escape Mageddon. Aztek heals Orion and then sacrifices himself to damage Mageddon, while Orion and the re-powered Kyle Rayner also fight against the weapon. After obtaining superpowers, many humans fly into space to battle Mageddon, though the anti-sun that powers it threatens to detonate and destroy half the galaxy. Superman is inspired to break free, and then disarms the anti-sun by absorbing its energy. Later, the JLA watchtower is rebuilt and the New Gods return to New Genesis, while the JLA reunite to respond to a new threat.

Eventually, Superman works to contain the fungal oil, which threatens to control organisms it comes in contact with. One week later, Atom is still missing, and Flash (Wally West) and Green Arrow continue to debate the ethics of wiping some of Batman’s memories to cover up the altering of Dr. Light’s mind. Batman instructs superheroes to draw the OMACs to a remote location in the Sahara. Sasha introduces a virus to Brother Eye to disrupt its broadcasts, just as an electromagnetic pulse bomb developed by Blue Beetle is detonated in the Sahara, disabling the OMACs and freeing the people inside. Brother Eye expels Sasha and her virus from its system and goes into hiding with the remaining 200,000 OMACs but not before broadcasting a video around the world of Wonder Woman killing Maxwell Lord. Later, Sasha tells Batman she wants to rebuild Checkmate, and she and Batman kiss.

J’onn J’onzz and John Stewart discuss potential new recruits and J’onzz voices his concerns that all of the threats to Earth are linked. J’onzz turns to talk to someone who he believes is Superman, but he is attacked and there is a massive explosion.

Geoff Johns [w], Phil Jimenez [p]
Animal Man joins other superheroes on the moon known as New Cronus, which they are hoping will take them to the centre of the universe. The Secret Society of Supervillains try to capture Power Girl but she is saved by Earth-Two Superman. The Society and Lex Luthor decide to use Black Adam for their mind-wiping machine instead, while another Lex is seen acting confused at the Arctic. Earth-Two Superman takes Power Girl to meet other survivors of the original Crisis, Superboy-Prime and Alexander Luthor. They explain that they have become disheartened observing the events on Earth and the behaviour of its heroes. They managed to escape the paradise they have lived in since the Crisis and came to Earth to help, but this has made Earth-Two Lois Lane very sick. They believe that the wrong universe (Earth-One) was used as the basis for the post-Crisis world when it should have been Earth-Two. Through exposure to Lois, Power Girl remembers the Crisis and her life on Earth-Two as Superman’s cousin (the Earth-Two version of Supergirl). Booster Gold arrives from the future too late to prevent the destruction of the JLA watchtower, so instead goes in search of Blue Beetle’s scarab. The OMACs attack Wonder Woman and the other Amazons on Themyscira.
By this point, Buddy and his family seem to be based in San Diego.

Buddy takes on the hawk’s lust for combat and fights the Thanagarians, though they argue that the Rannians have also committed atrocities. Eventually the hawk dies so the Thanagarians destroy the Rannians and their ship, while Firestorm manages to extract the dead bird and present it to the grateful Thanagarians.

She leaves, while some of the Outsiders (Arsenal, Katana, Grace, and Thunder) are let behind on Alcatraz and need to get a ferry back to the mainland. Roy (Arsenal) speaks with Grace Choi who believes he’s not cut out to be an Outsider because he’s not ruthless enough. In space, Captain Marvel Jr. finds that he can’t control his magic, so he flees fearing that he is a danger to his friends. The others see a bright light in space that Starfire believes to be the return of the goddess X’hal, and she leaves to investigate with Jade and Shift. They travel using a travel sphere until it destructs and they all float through space. Shift is then attacked by Blackfire (Komand’r), Starfire’s sister. In #32, Jade, Shift and Starfire are taken aboard Blackfire’s spaceship where Blackfire explains that she has been given great power temporarily. There is another fight, and Blackfire is defeated and imprisoned. Blackfire breaks free again and starts stealing all of Starfire’s powers until the others blow up the ship. The heroes are then picked up by Donna and the others on New Cronus and they resume their journey to the centre of the universe. Back in San Francisco, Katana learns from Sabbac (imprisoned in her Soultaker sword) that he was attempting to kidnap Captain Marvel Jr. to use in a device. The Amazons use a death ray in their defence against the OMACs, but the OMACs broadcast footage around the world to make Amazons seem dangerous to humans. Wonder Woman has no choice but to cease using the ray and order the Amazons to retreat. Paradise Island is then hidden from man’s world and not even Wonder Woman can find it. “Hands of Fate”, April 2006
Dave Gibbons [w], Ivan Reis, Joe Prado [p]
The heroes on New Cronus witness giant hands, made out of pure energy, emerging from the portal at the centre of the universe. Sardath realises that Rannians weren’t responsible for throwing Thanagar off orbit, which sparked the war. Blackfire, onboard a Tamaranean ship with Thanagar’s Grand Mor, decides to recommence fighting the Rannians, but the Grand Mor overrides her and orders the fleet to retreat. A large energy wave emanates from the portal and many ships are destroyed. Kilowog and a few other heroes travel to Thanagar where some warrior ships have landed hoping to rebuild Thanagar. Kyle Rayner and Jade (Jenny Hayden) attack the hands. Jade is killed and her father, Alan Scott, rushes to see her but she disintegrates in the next energy wave. Kyle reabsorbs Jade’s Green Lantern energy, which changes his appearance, and he now refers to himself as Ion. Adam Strange and the Hawkpeople come across a Thanagarian surveillance satellite amongst the debris in space. They find footage of Superboy-Prime moving planets and causing the war. After the satellite with the footage is destroyed, Strange and the Hawkpeople find further evidence on Thanagar in the form of handprint-shaped craters on the planet’s surface. Later, the heroes and emissaries from Rann and Thanagar meet on New Cronus to discuss the evidence. They coordinate an assault against the hands, which are emitting ever more powerful waves of energy.

He meets with the Justice League who accept him into the team after Booster has behaved heroically throughout the trial period, but he sees a vision of the death of Hal Jordan and declines their offer. On Rann, similar outbreaks of violence are occurring so Strange decides to take his family and flee to Boxos Shem, but they are attacked and only escape by stealing a jetpack. “The Dawning”, July 2008
Jim Starlin [w, c], Ron Lim [p], Rob Hunter, Jeromy Cox [c]
Hawkman (Carter Hall) infiltrates a congregation of Thanaragians lead by Deacon Dark and learns that they are devotees of a new religion. He reports his findings to Rann, where Sardath and other survivors of Lady Styx’s virus continue to worship her. Adam Strange plans to use a telepath, like Comet, to help the population realise that Styx is evil. He enlists the help of Starfire and Animal Man on Earth. Comet (actually Captain Comet pretending to be his own nephew) briefly visits the Justice League on Earth before returning to Hardcore Station where he screens phone calls from Strange. Deacon Dark meets with the criminals Seek and Find and gives them a device. When Comet goes to meet Max, the Chief Justice of the Station, Seek approaches Comet and detonates a bomb. On Throneworld, Prince Gavyn (Starman) finds that Bizarro has beaten up much of the Imperial Guard after being stranded on the planet, so Starman decides to help him. Elsewhere on Rann, Tigorr runs an illegal mining operation.

“Seek and Ye Shall Find!”, August 2008
Jim Starlin [w, c], Ron Lim [p], Rob Hunter, Jeromy Cox [c]
Comet survives the bomb that has destroyed the Justice Station by teleporting away just in time, and deduces that the Eternal Light Corporation are behind the attack. Max orders Comet off-planet, so he agrees to work for Adam Strange and travels to Rann. In a conversation with the other heroes, Strange details the plan to create a telepathic broadcaster to convince the population to reject Lady Styx. The heroes are called to action when a Thanagarian ship enters the atmosphere to steal minerals. After foiling the invaders, both the heroes and Thanagarians are attacked by a prehistoric Monarchasaurus. They are saved by The Weird who has left Hardcore Station and is trying to find his way back to Earth, and has been getting mistaken for a ghost by the Rannians. Strange reports the dinosaur to Sardath, who reveals that another prehistoric creature – the Shaggy Man – has also recently appeared. Meanwhile, Starman keeps Bizarro placated by feeding him and showing him cartoons. Tigorr calls an end to his mining operation and passes out drunk.

“Restoration”, September 2008
Jim Starlin [w, c], Ron Lim [p], Rob Hunter, Jeromy Cox [c]
Comet finally meets Strange and is told about the recent temporal anomalies. The Weird shows them that the Thanagarian raiders were wearing Eternal Light Corporation (ELC) medallions, which Sardath later discovers are mind controllers. Tigorr is captured by Rannian soldiers and asked to help against the threat posed by Lady Styx. Comet wants to leave but is convinced by his dog Tyrone to stay and help. When a giant volcano suddenly appears next to Ranagar, Sardath is able to track the temporal interference back to Hardcore Station. Vril Dox tells Max about the nefarious activities on the Station, and Max learns that Synnar is leading Seek and Find in attacking the Rannians. When the heroes arrive on Hardcore Station, they find Max hanging upside down, while the rest of the population appears to be in a trance. They are confronted by Synnar and Deacon Dark. On Rann, the Lighters have provoked the Rannians by crucifying a solider. Sardath calls for a genocide against the Thanagarians, and Hawkman is beaten by the mob. Elsewhere, Starman is alerted to a large fleet of ships entering the Throneworld atmosphere and his ship is destroyed when he confronts them. He survives and realises that the fleet belongs to Lady Styx.

Afterwards, Deacon Dark reveals that he used the time disrupting machine to rescue Synnar from a past battle with the Justice League in which he would have died. After further skirmishes, Adam Strange teams up with The Weird, who suggests retrieving Bizarro from Throneworld to help them reach the time disrupting machine. At the same time, Starman requires Bizarro’s assistance to fight Lady Styx’s fleet. Strange beams himself to Throneworld and returns with both Bizarro and Starman, who help destroy the machine. This causes the volcano on Rann to disappear, and Sardath to commute Hawkman’s death sentence. Back on Hardcore Station, the heroes regroup before Comet, Starman, Strange, Bizarro and The Weird return to Throneworld and find the planet and its population has been ravaged by Styx’s forces. Starman blames Strange for what has happened.

Dark visits Thanagar and convinces the Grand Mor to go to war with Rann, then returns to Hardcore Station to prepare to bring about the Second Coming. The heroes reconvene on Rann, and Hawkman and Alanna are freed from prison. Thanagarian ships attack a Rannian armada in orbit, with Sardath and the Grand Mor refusing to back down despite casualties on both sides. The heroes use a telepathic broadcaster that allows Comet to enter the minds of the Rannians and Thanagarians.  Comet pretends to be their respective gods and calls a halt to the battle. When the heroes return to Rann, Sardath directs them to investigate unusual emissions of radiation in the desert. In space, Lady Styx is also alerted to the emissions and plans to prevent the arrival of the ELC’s deity. In the desert, the heroes come across a ziggurat. While the Weird eavesdrops on the villains atop the structure, Thanagar’s fleet enters Rann’s atmosphere. Dark gives Synnar the duty of naming the Nameless One. Synnar was created at the beginning of time by the Supreme One and tasked with designing, and then maintaining, the Universe. However, Synnar later rebelled against his creator and began reabsorbing the universe to become more powerful. Eventually, Synnar was found out and destroyed, and all were forbidden to speak his name. However, a subatomic part of Synnar survived and remained concealed throughout time, slowly evolving and influencing a civilisation and later amassing an unstoppable army.
