This website is intended as a guide for collectors of comics featuring Animal Man, and for readers venturing into Grant Morrison’s Animal Man series for the first time.

The structure of this website is based closely off of my other site, Another Green World, which focusses on articles about Swamp Thing.  I began collecting Animal Man and Swamp Thing comics at around the same time, just prior to DC Comic’s The New 52 relaunch of 2011.  I was drawn to the ecological and horror themes of Swamp Thing, the social commentary and reality bending stories of Animal Man, and the art of both (especially Brian Bolland’s covers).  In 2011, A-Man and Swampy each received their own solo series, so my interest in both characters continued to develop.

I have always wanted to create something that demonstrates my interest in Animal Man comics, but there isn’t the same level of literature and fandom surrounding Animal Man as there is for Swamp Thing, so I have opted for a slightly different focus.  Like my other site, Wild Planet is named after an album I enjoy, and it will eventually include a comprehensive listing of appearances.  But it will feature a deeper dive into the 27 stories authored by Grant Morrison (if you include Secret Origins #39), which can be read as a complete, single text. For me, these issues were part of my early exploration into the DC Universe, and I would have found it useful at the time to have had more context around characters such as B’wana Beast, Mirror Master and Vixen.  I hope that my notes also convey some interesting information about graphic storytelling techniques and the comic book publishing industry in the 20th century. There are many books and websites that provide annotations for comics, though I have drawn particular inspiration from Jess Nevins’s annotations (with other contributors) for the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen books series.
